The corona virus outbreak has meant that many of us have had to adapt our lives dramatically. This may be causing worry, anxiety, stress, sadness, loneliness and frustration. These feelings are perfectly natural, remind yourself that this situation is temporary and these feelings will pass. However it is important to look after yourself physically and mentally.
Here are some simple well-being things that myself and that myself are doing to help us cope with the situation and find some kind of normality.
Establish some sort of routine and try and stick with it, for work and self-care. As we are working from home, it is easy to get caught up working too much or spending a lot of time watching television etc. Try and set yourself some time boundaries and adhere to them.
If you can, try and get out at least once a day for 30 minutes, early in the morning or later in the evening work well for us as there are less people around. Remember to stick to the government guidance in social distancing and staying local.
Keep in touch with others, use video calling to check in with family, friends and work colleagues. Seek support and provide support to others. Encourage your children and other family members to do the same as they miss their friends too.
Eat and drink well
We may be feeling slightly stressed which can lead to us changing eating habits. Try and eat well, regularly. Eat nutritious food, if you find yourself with more time on your hands, try cooking new dishes. Stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water.
Spend time doing things you enjoy
Plan time in your day to do the things that you enjoy, like listening to music, gardening, exercising, reading, and artwork. These things are really important for your mental health and will help to keep you energised.
Limit exposure to excessive negative news
News and information is often negatively skewed, limit yourself to checking a few times a day and make sure you’re using reliable accurate sources for your information.
Take notice of all the good the world
There are many good things happening around us. The good things that people are doing to support each other. As we get into Spring there are many plants and trees coming into bloom, take notice when you’re outside. If you can safely do so, helping others can make you feel good.
Finally, remember that this is only temporary; it may feel like it will never end, remind yourself that this will end.
