Happy new year to you all, I hope you have had a wonderful and restful festive season.
As we start the new year it is not uncommon for us to start feeling like we need to set new goals and ambitions for the year “new year resolutions”. We see people signing up for sports clubs, leisure centres and fitness classes. There is also an increase in requests for appointments for coaching, purchases in motivational books etc., just to help us with that extra push. Statistically we give up on these new year resolutions by the second week in January. Why? Maybe we set ourselves some unreasonable targets, maybe change is really difficult, maybe normal life takes over, whatever it is, evidence is that we give up not long after we started.
Instead of setting resolutions, which I might give up on, I go through a reflective process between Christmas and the new year. I have been doing this for the past 10 years and it works really well for me and I would like to share it with you. My reflections are on what happened the previous year and thoughts about the coming year. I get a piece of paper and set aside a couple of hours in a quiet place with a drink. I go through the same questions every year, you don’t have to use these questions, you could design your own using what is important to you. This exercise is simply about reflection and gratitude.
